Hiding the Anorectic

Through a critically rhetorical textual analysis of articles about anorexia and anorectics in popular women's and teens' magazines, the category of the “hidden anorectic” emerges. The “hidden anorectic” remains hidden because the popular press often overlooks her disordered eating. This becomes problematic when writers attempt to alert readers about the danger signs of anorexia. By specifically looking at the “hidden anorectic,” this essay seeks to explicate what previous articles have ignored, thus pursuing the reasons this issue is not addressed
