In 1989 a newly discovered hoard of 181 silver coins of the “imitation ancient Athenian tetradrachm” type was documented by Francine Stone. The coins had been found in the area of Baǧil, near the village of al‐ʿAydab on the eastern slope of Ǧabal Ǧarayd. The typological analysis of this hoard has led to the dating of its burial around the end of the 4th century BC. Fixing the date of the deposit of Baǧil was important not only for typological studies and for those concerning the circulation of Sabaean coins, but also for the history of the area. The nearest pre‐Islamic site known is the village of al‐Hāmid, one of the few pre‐Islamic sites attested in Tihāma. This village was presumably a way‐station along the Wadi Sihām, one of the routes connecting the interior of the country with the coast. The discovery of such a rich hoard in this area suggests intense use of the route at the end of the 4th century BC
