The Principles and Guidelines Governing the Conduct of Democratic Elections of the Southern African Development Community (SADC 2004) aim at enhancing transparency and credibility of elections and democratic governance as well as ensuring the acceptance of election results by all contesting parties. They are also meant to prevent election confl icts that potentially threaten constitutional stability in the region. As such, when Zimbabwe pioneered the application of some of these principles and guidelines in its 2005 parliamentary and senatorial elections, there was euphoria and optimism for better future elections in the entire region.
