Since adoption can solve both personal and societal problems, it is important to identify salient variables related to the perceptions of pregnant adolescents while in the process of deciding to keep or place their baby. An anonymous questionnaire administered at a residential facility for pregnant, unmarried persons in a Southwestern metropolitan area was the basis for this investigation of 178 teens who placed their baby for adoption. A number of contextual variables appear to influence the choice of adoption: family background and interaction patterns, religious values, cognitive factors, and peer relations
