Using grounded theory with a longitudinal research design considers relational situations through the concurrent generation and analysis of data from the same participants multiple times. This research design presents challenges, including integrating iterative grounded theory with a structured longitudinal research design and undertaking constant comparative analysis of a large amount of data over time. Abductive analysis can be employed to work through the challenges of using grounded theory methods with a longitudinal research design. Abduction can be used to bridge the structured and iterative towards developing a process that reflects change. Analysis is supported through the use of cumulative constant comparison, cumulative memos and the use of analytical tools including situational mapping and storyline. This paper discusses the practical challenges of using longitudinal research design with grounded theory in an investigation of belonging amongst first-year university students studying online.
