A theoretical understanding of the process by which programmes that seek to achieve personal growth of young people through adventure has provided a rationale for the use of activities where participants experience perceived risk. However, it has been argued that young people are already confronted by an increasing range of risks in their daily lives and, paradoxically, some adventure programmes are directed towards young offenders who already face a disproportionate amount of risk. The use of risk in outdoor adventure programmes with young offenders undergoing drug rehabilitation is examined through interviews with programme participants, programme managers and probation staff. This illustrates difficulties of risk management in programmes that require particular sensitivity to the disadvantages faced by clients. The major risks faced by clients were sustaining a new self-concept and lifestyle which excluded drug use. Experiences of outdoor adventure were not a direct substitute for drugs but they could act as a metaphor for overcoming the challenges of rehabilitation, provide a catalyst for changes in self-concept and the development of new trust relations, and the activities themselves could provide a new life interest. Thus risk, sensitively managed, could have positive outcomes
