This essay seeks to retrieve the little‐known and lesser acknowledged role of primary school teachers and the Teacher’s Training College in popularizing of football. Their history is important in qualifying the over‐emphasis on either public schools or popular working‐class origins of the game’s popularity. It also demonstrates the wider reach and cross‐class dispersal of the ideology of athleticism
