How does knowledge of the material foundations and socio-ecological impacts of digital markets shape green and ‘just transitions’ efforts? This article argues that growing awareness of digital markets’ embeddedness in societies and ecologies paradoxically spurs further transnational market-led efforts to attend to the ecological impacts of digital markets. This argument is grounded in the case of blockchain-based digital asset markets emerging over the decade between 2014 and 2024. Growing knowledge of the dirty and unequal underpinnings of blockchain-based markets generated by academics and Environmental NGOs like Greenpeace is shown to have resulted in more rather than less market-driven initiatives. We contend that knowledge infrastructures foregrounding (dis)connections between the digital and the socio-ecological worlds are essential heuristics for better understanding possibilities and perils as well as enacting just transitions.
