Cognitive schema theory is applied to sexual orientation, asserting that humans are most comfortable when sexual orientation can be neatly categorized. Bisexuality is thus cognitively problematic, as it straddles categories and defies markers and stereotypes. Bisexuality and other forms of sexual fluidity may not be accepted as actually existing if they do not fit into people's cognitive schemas, resulting in a denial of bi-sexuality, bisexuality's invisibility, and a desire to discover the so-called bisexual's “true” sexual orientation
