This article takes as its point of departure Frédéric Boyer’s 2019 translation of Virgil’s Georgics (under the title Le Souci de la terre) and the long introductory essay that accompanies it, entitled “Faire Virgile.” These last two words, understood as an invitation or, in fact, as an imperative to follow a manner of “doing,” to emulate or to translate the most unlikely of poetic models—a text “written in the Italian countryside more than two thousand years ago”—, provide us with a way to understand what it might mean for Boyer’s poetry, and more generally for French contemporary poetics, to attempt to “speak the earth.”
