This paper compares three modern poets and the way in which their adaptations of the Iliad fragment their source text, providing a survey of the strategies used in Christopher Logue's War Music, Michael Longley's Homeric poetry (particularly in The Ghost Orchid), and Alice Oswald's Memorial. The paper concludes that the general similarity between their approaches can be attributed to attitudes about the fragment which developed among the Modernists, but that a range of reasons exist for divergences between the three poets. Educational background, literary affiliation, and (in particular) the context that each poet wrote in explain the unique ways in which their Homers are fragmented. The paper also considers the way in which fragmentation in each case is accompanied by transmedial or transgeneric transformations of the source text
