Narrative strategy and the construction of complex identities in porn star memoirs

This article is a rhetorical genre analysis of four memoirs by self-proclaimed ‘porn stars’. Using tools of discourse and narrative analysis, the article aims to map the genre by linguistic form rather than content, focusing on key sites of overlap that are salient throughout the texts. These sites are demonstrative of the discursive strategies authors employ to negotiate complex identities; often enabling the creation of a secondary identity while simultaneously maintaining a ‘moral framework’. A few of the ‘sites’ focused on are: the invocation of labels for identity indexing; the use of coherence principles to establish causality for a taboo self; and the utilization of performative language in the declaration of a final, ‘new’ self. In addition to presenting a schematic overview of the genre, the article aims to engage with current feminist discourses on pornography and female ‘empowerment’, with the hope of shedding some light on prevailing hegemonic pressures
