This special issue approaches pornography—particularly socalled ‘extreme pornography’—as a privileged site for examining the shifting relations between visibility and power, representation and transgression. By tracing the repressed or subordinated textual and social meanings that both characterize and emanate from extreme pornographies across different historical and geographical contexts, the essays gathered here explore the micropolitics of the obscene, the conditions under which it becomes legible, and the subversive potential of its re-articulations within the broader media landscape
