Effects of faking instructions on the Zung Self-rating Depression Scale were investigated for both male and female Ss. There were no sex differences but there was a significant difference due to instructions ( p < .05). Ss instructed to respond as maladjusted obtained scores indicative of greater depression than did Ss given “fake good” or standard instructions. No significant differences were found between the latter instructions and no significant interaction between sex and instructions
