This article reports on a new method for summarizing and analyzing the results of a psychophysical experiment involving proportional circle maps. The results of a test designed to determine how people perceive clusters of circles on maps were analyzed using two methods: first, isolines were used to indicate the percentage of instances when subjects identified a given circle as being part of a cluster; and second, using Delaunay triangles as links between pairs of circles, percentages were calculated to show how frequently a pair of circles was perceived to be part of the same cluster. The latter technique proved to be a better method for discriminating between groups of circles which were located in close proximity to each other on the map but were still seen as independent perceptual units by the respondents. A further advantage of this method is that it permits a statistical comparison of psychophysical responses between maps.
