The study examines three types of data differentiation and the relationships between them and cartographic symbolization. The differentiation of point, line, area, and volume data generally corresponds to the use of point, line, and area symbols. There are exceptions to the general rule, of which the use of point symbols for area data in aggregate form is most common in mapping. Data may or may not be processed prior to symbolization. Processed data often require different methods of symbolization from raw data. Data can be differentiated according to nominal, ordinal, interval, or ratio scale. It has been suggested in the literature that symbolization should depend upon the level of measurement. This study explores problems related to this guideline, namely, the combination of measurement scales in a thematic map, the correspondence between measurement scale and map symbol, and the effect of data classification.
