In the Manjak kingdom of Babok in Guinea-Bissau, most people continue to adhere to their ancestral religion. They come to maturity within a cosmos made up of invisible entities that both collaborate and conflict with each other. Women are particularly active as diviners and healers in this community. They oversee ritual practices for combatting witchcraft, which enables them to counter affliction and thereby to acquire social power in the realm of the profane in a dynamic and changing society. The article offers a structural analysis of healers’ representations of the body, of consciousness, and of their witch adversaries. By assuming positions of power in communication with the invisible and the sacred—whether as a result of having been chosen by divine beings or by maneuvering themselves into positions of authority—these women actively generate the forces that empower them in the practical and secular world
