Staging Stereotype and Performing the Exotic Erotic

Seeking contemporary performance strategies for the staging of the black female body in South Africa, I find a motion in feminist theatre where positions of difference, and the dissection, celebration and exploration of it, supports the empowerment of representations of the female body in the process of developing new subjectivities for the stage. But in these explorations, I find myself constantly returning to complexities surrounding the notion of “difference”. Representations of difference have for so long been associated with processes of 'othering' and distinguishing difference in a negative light. This is apparent in many of the problematic stereotypes surrounding the female body in particular, and by implication her capacity for desire. Searching through feminist academia in my attempts to deconstruct representation surrounding the female form, I am reminded of the inconsistencies of language
