O VER THE PAST TWO HUNDRED YEARS novelists and critics have given us a diversified picture of Tobias Smollett. The Reverend Alexander Carlyle, an intimate friend of novelist, recalled in his Autobiography that Smollett possessed a philosophical mind, and was capable of making soundest observations on human life, 1 whereas William Hazlitt contended that Smollett seldom probes to quick, or penetrates beyond surface. 2 Coleridge's remark that he found the congeniality of humor with pathos, so exquisite in . . . Smollett, I is in substantial agreement with Critical Review of 1762, which found strong indications of Smollett's benevolent heart in Sir Launcelot Greaves (17601761).4 Laurence Sterne, however, satirically portrayed Smollett in A Sentimental Journey (1768) as truculent and misanthropic Smelfungus. Sterne was expressing an opinion which has persisted into twentieth century, for a contemporary scholar writing on Smollett's Travels Through France and Italy (1766) remarked that
