Strong similarities exist between the instructions to preachers written by Gasparo Contarini and Marcello Cervini during the sixteenth century, which they addressed to the clergy under their jurisdiction in the dioceses of Belluno and Gubbio. From the evidence provided in these texts, it is clear that the two prelates shared nearly identical attitudes toward heresy encountered on the local level, as well as remarkably similar lists of essential concepts to be covered by popular preachers. Such evidence may call into question the common assessment of these men as ideological enemies
