Couldry's focus in this book is multifaceted. He begins by stating that the book is larger study about media?s consequences for the social world (p. 5) and an effort to provide alternative perspectives to understand the overwhelming presence of in our lives. More importantly, it is a commentary on ethics; not as much about ethics of the but rather developing an ethical framework for deciding what citizens in a democracy should do about media (p. 5). In the first chapter, 'Listening Out for Connections', Couldry explains his use of the metaphor listening (as opposed to seeing) as a title for his book
