Selected Phenomena from the Arabic Dialect of the Jews of Damascus

This article presents, for the first time, a range of features in Judeo-Damascene ( JD ), the spoken dialect of the Jews of Damascus, that distinguish it from the common Damascene ( CD ) dialect of the non-Jewish communities. The article is based on recorded interviews with Damascene Jews. This Jewish dialect is distinct from the Arabic dialect spoken by the Muslim and Christian populations of Damascus not only lexically—in the use of vocabulary from Hebrew and Romance sources—but also in some features of its phonology and morphology. Distinctive forms appear in verbal inflections, pronouns, prepositions, and other morphological categories. The article also compares JD with other Jewish dialects and vernaculars in the Levant and shows some interesting links between JD and Christian Damascene
