This issue also features a book symposium on Sophia Stamatopoulou-Robbin’s Waste siege: The life of infrastructure in Palestine. This outstanding book analyzes waste in both its ontological and phenomenological forms—that is to say, it considers both the biological effects of waste on the human bodies of those who are forced to live with it, and the social effects of the often scientifically inaccurate interpretations of waste that those same people make. In the symposium, Rosalind Fredericks, Amahl Bishara, Kali Rubaii, and Munira Khayyat question the political and ethical commitments and effects of an ethnography that simultaneously deals in the ontological and the phenomenological. What are the hazards of thinking waste siege in Palestine as part of a global condition versus the hazards of thinking it primarily in terms of Israeli occupation? In what senses are the material transformation of waste (processes of decay, oxidation, dispersal, and concentration) political and in what ways are the imagined politics of waste scientific? In their respectful but critical comments and in Stamatopoulou-Robbin’s thoughtful reply, the contributors to this section ensure that the provocative and inescapable problems of waste receive the attention they deserve
