In attempting to depict the personality of Liu An, grandson of the founding emperor of the Former Han dynasty, the author examines three sources of evidence: the account of his life presented in the Standard Histories; the chapter on generalship and warfare from the Huai-nan-tzu, which reflects, according to the author, Liu An's view of himself as he would have liked to be; the legend of his apotheosis as a Taoist adept. The tragedy of Liu An's life was that he diverted so much time and energy from philosophical and literary pursuits, for which he was admirably equipped, to tedious scheming and fruitless sallies into the real world of politics
