Three examples of sanctified butchering with miraculous behaviour of the future victims in the time of Saint Felix’s day, narrated by Paulinus of Nola in his XXth Carmen, illustrate neither pagan survivals nor a radical transformation, but new Christian interpretations of the traditional votum, within gradual conversion strategies. The poem itself is equivalent to a consecrated meal (epulum), while it shows for the conversion of the faithful the signs offered by the behaviour of the slaughtered animals. The paper discusses the way in which the words and description of the meal subtly deviate from pagan sacrifice. Nevertheless these vota ending into a sacred meal in Christian hagiography are very rare, and contrast with the frequent accounts of miraculous animals, about which apologetic introduces a new meaning
