There are two fundamental models of conceiving the origin of the world, an intransitive and a transitive one. This chapter refers to the intransitive model by the term tcosmogonyt and to the transitive one by the term tcreationt. The creation by speech, or the speech act as a major means of creation, seems to be the great innovation of the New Kingdom, after some significant precursors in the Coffin Texts of the Middle Kingdom. The Memphite Theology has always been interpreted as the closest Egyptian parallel to the Biblical idea of creation through the word. The totality of creation is encompassed in the term things and all hieroglyphs. The sacred texts which were written in hieroglyphs are called scrolls of divine speech.
