Introduction to Orientalism

This chapter presents commonly used terms in the study of postcolonialism. The terms listed begin with the alphabet “B”. Detailed explanation is provided for several terms, including barbarian/barbaric, Black Atlantic and black consciousness. Each entry includes the origin of the term; a detailed explanation of its perceived meaning; and examples of the term's use in literary-cultural texts. People from Barbary (North Africa) were called barbarians. The barbarian was non- or pre-modern, primitive and savage in contrast with the European who was modern and civilized. Using the image of the sailing ship, Paul Gilroy proposes that transculturation is what constituted black identity. Philosophical writings and cultural studies have found their intellectual antecedents in the black consciousness movement. Black consciousness in academia has now enlarged its scope to include aboriginals and ethnic groups whose histories of exploited cultures bring them together as people of colour
