Early human settlers and their impact on Madagascar’s landscapes

The deep history of environmental variability and change in Madagascar provides a benchmark against which to assess conditions today and design management interventions for the future (Willis et al., 2007). As knowledge of the island’s palaeoecology and the role played by people in changes over the past few thousand years has increased, it has forced abandonment of the widespread but simplistic story of a lost Garden of Eden, destroyed by the Malagasy people. Recent work is steadily replacing that narrative with an account of the dynamic and complex interplay of climate, the arrival and activities of people, and the nature of the landscapes they encountered and shaped. This chapter gives a glimpse of the research that supports these new interpretations, which offer valuable insights for environmental policy in the years to come. Recounting some of my own work with colleagues in Madagascar, I also try to evoke the interest, excitement, and unpredictability of field archaeology
