Chapter Nine. The Case For A Critical Sociology Of Religion

There is vacuum in sociology of religion-a vacuum of left. The goal of this chapter is to make case for a new paradigm in sociology of religion: critical sociology of A critical sociology of religion has promise of providing an alternative to mainstream and positivistic approaches in sociology of It explores reasons for this omission and benefits of establishing critical perspective within subdiscipline. The theoretical framework, which guides critical sociology of religion, is critical theory of religion, in its loosest sense. Max Weber and Emile Durkheim serve as classics in sociology of Karl Marx wrote that the premise of all is criticism of religion.
