Popular religious movements in Latin America are currently reinterpreting traditional Catholic and Afro-American saints. These movements are expanding across national borders in the Americas and, as in the case of the 'Cuban' Santería, even across continents. This paper explores the contribution of these movements to a presumed globalization of the sacred, displaying unique characteristics that are different from earlier phases of worldwide network formation. It argues that religious reconfigurations take place within competing interests of states, the hegemonic Catholic Church and increasingly mobile religious actors. Mass phenomena such as the pilgrimage to San Lázaro or the devotion of Santa Muerte have experienced a transformation resulting from new dynamics of migration and the subsequent transnationalization of social spheres. Using the example of the current transformation of Santería in its homeland Cuba and its expansion to Mexico, this article examines the interrelations of transnational social spheres. New patterns such as networks of ritual kinship and religious innovators as well as universalistic strategies of legitimation, which function as a trigger to provide common access to these religious communities beyond shared cultural values, social identities and regional affiliations, give rise to new global religious landscapes
