The South

To most analysts, the main fighting of the 2011 Libyan uprisings was waged over a thin strip of Mediterranean coastline, with events in Libya’s “south”—that is its vast Saharan interior—seemingly tangential to the outcome of the civil war. Consequently, despite the intense media and academic focus on the uprisings from February 2011 onward, much of Libya remained terra incognita; unlike the maps in this volume, most media maps depicting the rebel and pro-Qadhafi controlled areas tended to focus entirely on the littoral region—a physical representation of the widely held view that because events in Libya’s Sahara were geographically peripheral and involved different tribes and ethnic groups that they were somehow less politically significant to the course of the uprisings or to the country’s postconflict stability. Overlooking the south was in some respects inevitable due to the paucity of accurate, timely information available to mainstream media. However, similar to the dynamics at play in the north, the separate and disparate uprisings in Libya’s south demonstrated their own localized sociopolitical and tribal dynamics, very similar to those described by Wolfram Lacher in Chapter 5
