The simplest yet at the same time most significant classification of markets in West Africa is one which distinguishes between periodic and non-periodic markets. The range of periodicity varies from one part of the region to another. In Yorubaland, for instance, one can distinguish a periodicity based on the 4-day week, which occurs also in many other parts of southern West Africa. One of the two major differences between periodic markets and daily markets is that whereas daily markets are most characteristic of towns, periodic markets occur in all kinds of settlements, or even in open country. The bulk of the periodic markets of West Africa are certainly rural in their location. In the language of central place studies, the whole trend can be seen as the crystallization of central-place-type institutions about the market-place.
