This essay explores the impact of the Internet on China's print culture through an analysis of Chinese Internet literature defined as all Web-based writings that are viewed as literature by their authors or readers, regardless of genre. It focuses on the early history of Chinese Internet literature, from 1997 to roughly 2003. The author argues that Chinese Internet literature developed in complex interaction with the existing literary field. One consequence of Internet publishing is the proliferation of published works in cyberspace. Internet literature is also changing the meaning of authorship and the boundaries between authors and readers. In addition to reflecting the structural changes in Chinese society, the ongoing development of Chinese Internet literature depends on the agency of Internet writers and Web sites.
