s last letter was still in transit when Jessie Sampter died, and so her dear friend would never read it. Antin often went many months without answering Jessie's letters, and so there were quiet times in their correspondence, but this new silence between them meant something else entirely. There would be no more letters. Antin was bereft. She sent a letter to Jessie's sister. "Death has visited me many times," she wrote. "I thought I knew how it felt to lose a friend. But this is-Jessie. Elvie dear, I have been lost in a cloud of selfish grief. I can't spare Jessie."
