The author analyzes various aspects of the post-revolutionary stabilisation of the french society, from the point of view of the constitution of a public space, after the Terror. Contrary to the escalation of suspicion, the french political cultures learn to manage a frontier between what has to be concealed and what has to be revealed. Conditions of a democratic publicity are thereby defined, included in the practical ideals of citizens. These conditions are based on the complementarity of a «negative» and a «positive» public space. Beyond the antidemocratic aspects and the censures of the public opinion, local public spaces, as places of citizens’ initiatives and responsibilities, are maintained alive, which may be rediscovered through the demands for legitimation of the leading personalities and the local jurisprudential functioning
