The genus Arvicola can be used as an important biostratigraphic tool during the Middle Pleistocene. Both the earliest occurrence ofArvicola, and the gradual reduction of the enamel thickness in some parts of the molars, can be used as stratigraphic markers. The earliest occurrence of Arvicola, that is the Mimomys-Arvicola boundary, is younger than the Brunhes-Matuyama boundary, definitely older than the first major advance of the Elsterian / Anglian ice sheet and even older than Interglacial IV of the ‘Cromerian Complex’ in the Netherlands. This excludes the possibility that the West Runton Upper Freshwater Bed and the interglacial of Voigtstedt correlate with the Cromer IV Interglacial and immediately precede the Elsterian / Anglian ice advance, as has previously been suggested. The record ofArvicola does not occur in the faunal list from ‘Ubeidiya is rejected, and the claimed stratigraphical position of the Isernia fauna, which contains Arvicola, below the Brunhes-Matuyama boundary, must be regarded as doubtful. The thinning of the enamel band in the trailing edge of the molars characterizing the evolution from Arvicola terrestris cantiana to Arvicola terrestris terrestris can only be used as a stratigraphic indicator in combination with other criteria, since the extant populations of Arvicola terrestris show a strong morphological cline in this characteristic from the Mediterranean to Northern Europe. However, if the fossil record is complete enough, waves of immigration of more primitive forms can be traced from the Mediterranean area into Central Europe.
