From Cure to Healing
Rethinking the Nature of Cure Within a Redecision Perspective

This article considers how new developments in psychiatry and psychology emerging from the clinical experiences of World War II energized theoreticians such as Eric Berne to emphasize the concept of cure in psychotherapy. The author reviews his own formation in the context of redecision therapy as taught by Robert and Mary Goulding and their view on the concept of cure. He offers a perspective on healing as an alternative frame to curing. Healing occurs through the resolution of injunctive messages, moving through the impasses from bitter attitudes concerning life and self to healing ones. Major factors in this process are the compassion, affirmation, and admiration of the therapist for the person when they were young and facing the daunting task of dealing with injunctive messages
