The psychoanalytic concept of projective identification refers to the unconscious defensive function of the interactions between two or more individuals. This concept is usually considered complex and difficult to grasp. However, recognizing and considering the full course and culmination of a client's game (game analysis) provides the clinician with less difficult access to and recognition of the projective identifications inherent in such patterns of behavior. Conversely, analysis of projective identification reveals the unconscious defensive function of a game.
