The aging do not appear to constitute a subculture. The cultural scripting of older people is characterized by ageism conveyed in stereotypes and myths which discount them. Factors combating this include governmental concern with changing demographics and the special needs of the aging, resulting in programs to provide needed social and environmental supports, and the commitment of older people themselves to solving problems and resisting ageism
