This paper offers a framework for a structured approach to relationship psychotherapy grounded in transactional analysis. The author uses the transactional analysis concepts of decontamination and deconfusion to outline a staged treatment process. This process integrates cognitive strategies to strengthen the relationship “Adult,” thereby laying the foundation for a deeper exploration of unconscious dynamics within the relationship “Child.” Consideration is also given to the influence of relationship “Parent” introjects. The approach is integrative, incorporating contemporary, evidence-based practices from the broader field of relationship psychotherapy into the familiar transactional analysis treatment sequence and addresses the target, focus, and nature of transactional analysis in relationship therapy
