Family ministry in Jamaica is an area of pastoral care that has not always had the benefit of critical theological reflection. In this article, I will attempt to do just that by sharing some of the ways that my perspective on Jamaican inner city families has been informed, first by the experiences of ministry, and secondly by qualitative research recently undertaken in Jamaica. I will go on to explore some of the challenges the Church faces as it seeks to respond to the needs of these families, understood within their sociohistorical context. My hope is that it will stimulate some discussion in this area of pastoral theology, and challenge some of the Church’s current ways of working with African Caribbean families in the Caribbean and the United Kingdom
