On the basis of some recent research in Indo-European phonology and morphology, it is suggested in this paper that the IE cardinals 5 to 10 were subject to affixation by non-singular markers. These markers, probably originating as quantitative enclitic adverbs, were added to these numerals in order to hypercharacterize their inherent non-singular meaning. Specifically, it is proposed that '5', '7', '8', '9', and '10' were all hypercharacterized by the suffix *-n, while '6' was hypercharacterized by the suffix *-s. In addition, dialectal data imply that within Indo-European '7' and '10' showed the non-singular element *-t, generally in contamination with *-n. Such an assessment represents a major departure from the traditional view that in Indo-European these numerals, with the exception of '8', were uninflected forms.
