The transition from school to work of a group of Indian school-leavers

This article discusses the findings of a longitudinal study on the transition from school to work of a group of Indian school-leavers from two co-educational secondary schools. Designed on the principles of qualitative research, it examines the processes underlying the formation of the career pathways of these students and deals with the day-today experiences of both boys and girls from different social classes in school, at work, and during unemployment. Though there is individual choice, this study confirms that occupational choice is mainly determined by opportunities in society. Though the students expressed several grievances about school and employment prospects, generally they were prepared to be accommodating and adjusting to existing circumstances. By focussing on the cultural interpretations and practices of the students, as well as the structural conditions in which these are located, the study attempts to explain how social status remains essentially unaltered as they enter paid employment. The career pathways are studied against the background of the culture of Indians, and their socio-historical location in the South African society as an intermediate status group. Race, class, and gender exist side by side in this social and cultural reproduction process
