Adolescence is a pivotal life stage when news habits are formed. In this study, I focus on the socialization of teenagers into various repertoires of news consumption. Specifically, I consider how exposure to news-rich environments (via parents, peers, and schools) relates to teens developing certain habits of news consumption. Data for this study comes from a nationally representative survey of 13- to 17-year-olds (n = 1,509) in the US. Overall, I find four repertoires of news consumption—TV news consumers, social media news consumers, news omnivores, and news minimalists— and a distinct set of socialization factors related to each. The most consistent finding is the strong relationship between news-related classroom activities and all four repertoires. Notably, more than half of US teens have a repertoire of minimal news consumption, which is associated with an absence of news among parents, peers, and schools
