Making the law understandable is not a luxury, but an essential condition for access to justice. Based on the rewriting of the declaration of rights given to people arrested by the police, this article shows how plain language and legal design can transform theoretical rights into genuinely understood and usable protections. Through an analysis of the process of rewriting this document, it highlights the legal and democratic issues involved in ensuring an effective understanding of rights and the effectiveness of the right to information in criminal proceedings
