Language and the spoken-word are two concepts between which contemporary science distinguishes quite distinctly. A linguistic approach permits a clarification of the particular way in which this dichotomy between these two concepts exists in Black Africa. To start with it is necessary to define the ontological status of the spoken-word in order to be able to proceed to a more philosophical level and to determine the implications of the African world-view on the spoken-word, because for the African, he who masters the spoken work is master of the world. European concepts of linguistics, if adapted to a new field of study, represent a useful instrument which will contribute to a better understanding of the nature and rôle of African spoken-word
