In 1988 I was invited to address a group of historians and social scientists concerned with Mau Mau and discuss it had been to do fieldwork during Mau Mau.' I can only make sense of my memories by broadening question. What it was like was a function of attributes I brought to and what I understood to be. This turn was strongly influenced by my informants, people who lived Mau Mau in field, and their understanding of what Mau Mau and the field were
