It is tempting to see the conflict between the universities and the government in Kenya as part of the current continent-wide confrontation which has seen universities in many African countries become centres of vigorous and sometimes violent opposition to authoritarian governments. There is an element of truth in this, but it hides a larger reality because the conflict in Kenya became endemic many years ago. These difficulties had their roots in the late I96os, when President Kenyatta was in power. Since then there has been ongoing and escalating confrontation between the university community and the government which has reached the state of permanent crisis. To date the regime has been able to repress and contain its critics in the universities, but it has failed to eradicate the syndrome of protest. When Sir Eric Ashby gave the Godkin lectures at Harvard in 1964, he chose as his theme academic freedom and cultural nationalism in African universities (Ashby 1964). He was one of the first academics to analyze the issue of academic freedom as it pertained to Africa. It is interesting to reread those lectures in the light of events in Kenya. Sir Eric focused on two themes. The first was the relevance of the curriculum, and the second was the relationship of the universities to the state
