Narrative therapy and older adults living alone
A qualitative study in Mainland China

The global demographic landscape is unmistakably shifting towards ageing, and China is no exception. With the progress in economic and social development, the mental health of older adults living alone has garnered increasing attention across various disciplines. This study employs a qualitative research approach to examine the efficacy of narrative therapy in the subjective well-being of older adults living alone. By interviewing 16 respondents and analysing secondary data from the social work agency, this study revealed that narrative therapy demonstrates effectiveness in ameliorating the subjective well-being of older adults, albeit with certain limitations and challenges persisting in narrative therapy interventions targeting older adults living independently. Finally, based on the discussion, this study made recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of narrative therapy in improving the subjective well-being of older adults living alone, as well as to improve the overall effectiveness of geriatric social work in mainland China
