Interviews about the perceived causes, treatment, and prevention of smallpox were conducted in the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh during 1973–74. Informants provided very diverse responses to the interview questions. This great diversity can be reduced by tracing particular ideas back to the various systems of medicine currently available in North India. The coexistence of contradictions among these ideas can be explained by reference to the fact that Indians generally acknowledge a variety of disease‐causative agents, which operate at different levels of the physical, psychological and spiritual environment in which people are thought to live. But the great diversity in medical ideas within the limited geocultural research area cannot entirely be explained away. The variety exists, is maintained and serves to provide its recipient population with a wide range of alternative theories, therapies, and practitioners, to which individuals have access according to their need, situation, habit, and choice
